Explosive jazz sax and drums duo Run Logan Run have a new, very limited 12" vinyl single out today (5th August)! This is a band I have always adored. Friends for a long time from when the ideas guru Dan Johnson was there on drums to now with exuberantly humble and talented Matt Brown thumping away. Andy (Andrew Neil Hayes who provided a stunning sax performance on Hope A Softer Thought by Hysterical Injury), asked me if I'd like to join him and Matt at their rehearsal studio in writing new music last year.
'Silver Afternoon' is an epic 9 minute track that Andy, Matt, Riaan and I wrote together and is out on SUPER limited 12" vinyl with a locked groove B-side! It has stunning orchestral arrangements by Riaan Vosloo who is also on bass and features incredible performances from Hazel Mills on backing vocals, Dan Moore on piano and dulcitone, Pete Judge on trumpet, Mat Colman (trombone), Justin Pavey (trombone) and members of Parallax Orchestra - Guy Button (violin), Will Harvey (violin), Richard Jones (viola), Peteris Sokolovskis (cello)...and of course I am singing on it...
The lyrics came to me on sunny day where the air was a breezy haze of pollen and I was sitting inside a circle of five young silver birch trees at Greenbank Cemetery in Easton, Bristol. It reminded me of Glastonbury Grove, from the 1990’s hit TV show Twin Peaks, which presents itself as a mysterious portal into the mythical Black Lodge. My mind began to wander to what I now realise was Llyn Y Fan Fach in the Brecon Beacons, Wales where the story of the Lady of the Lake resides. The story is full of interesting moments, but the image of the Lady teaching her three sons (who became known as The Physicians of Myddfai) herbal medicine at the edge of the lake incarnated in my imagination as the ‘lakeside ladies’.
I think that meaning is a listener’s prerogative to interpret as they wish but this story can give context to where the ideas came from...
